If we were to ask people to recall or quote a verse from the Bible, without a doubt the most common response would be John 3:16. It is undoubtedly the best-known verse in the Bible.
To understand 1 John 5:11, we use as a reference this famous verse from John 3:16 which is spoken in the meeting between Jesus and a Pharisee named Nicodemus. During their conversation we see the most important question emerge: “How can a man be born when he is already old? Can he enter his mother's womb a second time and be born?” Jesus' response must have come as a total shock to Nicodemus. All his life he had been trained to believe that his entry into the Kingdom of God depended on his behavior and right standing before God. But the truth is that this was an impossible task because humanity could never do enough to earn a rightful standing before God. Our sin has created an unbridgeable gap between God and us. But now Jesus comes and says that all Nicodemus has to do is believe in the Son: have faith! This is the truth revealed in the Word of God.
Today each of us has the opportunity to come into the light, to leave the darkness of uncertainty behind us. All we have to do is believe and have faith, because His word says: And the testimony is this: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
Together we pray to the Lord telling him: God in heaven, thank you for salvation. Thank you for your great love. Thank you for the gift of eternal life. Help me to live a life consecrated to you. In the name of Jesus... Amen!
